FAQ
Everything you might wonder before beginning somatic psychotherapy — Core Energetics, touch & consent, cost, and online sessions.
Somatic psychotherapy is a body-centered approach to healing that treats the body as a direct pathway to emotional and psychological change, not just a symptom of the mind. Rather than only talking through problems, it works with breath, sensation, posture, and movement to help you access and release patterns held in the nervous system. This makes it especially effective for concerns that talk therapy alone hasn't fully resolved.
Core Energetics is a body-centered psychotherapy method developed by Dr. John Pierrakos, a student of Wilhelm Reich, that views the body as a map of energy, character, and unresolved emotion. It combines breathwork, movement, and grounded awareness to release chronic muscular tension and reconnect you with your vital life force. At Inner Knowing, Core Energetics is the foundation for working with sexual energy, anger, and chronic tension.
No. Somatic psychotherapy at Inner Knowing is not a form of medical treatment, and it doesn't constitute clinical psychology, counselling, or psychiatry — it's not intended to replace any of these. If you're already working with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or other registered health professional, this work can sit alongside that care, and I'm always happy to discuss it with you. Where it seems useful, I'll suggest or help facilitate a referral to another professional.
Sometimes, yes. When touch is used, it's light and non-sexual — gentle pressure on muscles, supportive contact, or assisted stretches — there to support awareness and help energy move. Permission is asked before any physical contact, every time, and you can withdraw consent at any moment simply by saying "stop" or "no." Read more about how sessions work.
No — you can book a free 15-minute discovery call or a session directly, without a referral from a GP or anyone else.
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Shorts and a t-shirt or singlet work well for body-based work, though you're welcome to wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
Yes. Sessions are available worldwide via Zoom, with the same ethical standards and confidentiality as in-person work. I want to be upfront about the limits, though: online somatic therapy can't fully replicate the physical co-regulation and embodied sense of presence that being in the same room provides. Where in-person work seems like it would serve your process better, I'll say so.
Yes — sessions are available in English and Spanish. Sí — sesiones disponibles en español.
$75 AUD for a 55-minute session. This work is not eligible for Medicare rebates, but some private health funds offer complementary-therapy rebates via my IICT student membership — check directly with your insurer.
This varies from person to person. In my experience, deep and lasting change tends to come from consistent work over an extended period, rather than a handful of sessions — though there are no guarantees of specific outcomes, and progress depends on many factors, including your own engagement and circumstances. We review the scope and pace of the work together, collaboratively, as we go.
